John, the Baptist's identity
John 1:19-28
19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
John, the baptist who was baptizing in the Jordan River, answered the question of "Who are you?", saying that I am not the Messiah, nor the Prophet, and just the voice of one calling in the wilderness, making straight the way for the Lord. And then he replied the question of "Why do you baptize?", saying that I baptize with water, but..., which was not the exact answer to the interviewers. They asked about the reasons why he was baptizing, but he was telling about the way to do it, not the reasons, which is totally different from the quests.
Actually, he was the Prophet, but he looked like humbling himself, but exactly speaking, he was right. He knew about himself very well. He was just the voice of one calling in the wilderness, and his purpose of life is to make straight the way for the Lord, Jesus. Secondly, there is no possibility of knowing the reason of him baptizing because no one was baptizing before him. He must have done it without knowing it, but it was the Holy Spirit who led him to do it, so he could not tell the answer, except the way to do it: baptizing with water.
Likewise, If I were an interviewee, being asked of who I am and why I am doing this or that, then I would willingly answer that I am the Christian, and I am writing and teaching, led by the Holy Spirit, so that I could glorify His name.
