Prosecutors dispatched by Washington D.C. District Attorney Pirro made an unannounced visit to the Federal Reserve. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has long been under fire from Donald Trump for refusing to lower interest rates as demanded, and this visit is seen as part of that ongoing offensive. There are concerns that an investigation into Powell could delay the confirmation hearing of Kevin Warsh, Trump’s nominee for the next Fed chair.
Upon arriving at the Fed, which is currently undergoing a $2.5 billion renovation, Pirro’s prosecutors were denied entry because they had not filed a formal request for a visit. Robert Hur, outside counsel for the Fed, criticized the move, accusing the prosecutors of ignoring a court ruling which stated that Pirro’s investigation into Powell lacked sufficient evidence of criminality to proceed. However, Ms. Pirro showed no signs of downshifting, arguing that an investigation is justified given that the Fed's construction costs have exceeded the original budget by 80%.
Even before this visit, the Justice Department faced several legal setbacks in its efforts to target Powell and the Fed. A federal judge recently denied the department’s request to reconsider an earlier ruling that quashed subpoenas issued to the central bank. In that ruling, the judge noted there was abundant evidence that the subpoenas’ purpose was to harass and pressure Powell into either yielding to the President or resigning to make way for a successor who would. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters that "we want Kevin Warsh in as soon as possible."
