Dianna Russini, a reporter for The Athletic, which is owned by The New York Times, has resigned following the circulation of photographs showing her holding hands with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel in a jacuzzi at a luxury resort.
Ginsberg, the executive editor of The Athletic, stated that the publication is currently reviewing the matter. The Athletic’s editorial guidelines strictly require its journalists to avoid any activities that pose a conflict of interest—or even the appearance of a conflict—so as not to jeopardize their professional credibility.
Russini posted her resignation on the social media platform X. In a separate statement to other media outlets, she maintained that she has covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout her career and stated, "I stand behind every story I have ever published."
Vrabel said that the interaction was "completely innocent" and noted that the photographs failed to represent the larger group of six people who were hanging out together throughout the day.
Ginsberg further commented that the images were "misleading and lack essential context." He added that while the internal investigation was still underway, Russini ultimately chose to step down from her position.
