Protesters waving the Afghan national flag turned out in a number of cities to oppose the Taliban’s conquest of Afghanistan. Witnesses reported that Taliban militants fired on crowds in the city of Asadabad, as they had the day before in Jalalabad where they killed three people. Reports also emerged of the Taliban preventing people, including some with visas, from reaching Kabul airport, which is enveloped in chaos as Afghans desperately try to escape the country. A Taliban official told Reuters that 12 people have died at the airport since Sunday.

Ashraf Ghani arrived in the United Arab Emirates saying he was in talks to return to Afghanistan where he is still, officially at least, the president. He denied taking masses of money with him when he fled. America has blocked the Taliban from drawing on IMF reserves including about $450m in “special drawing rights”—a type of IOU that can be swapped for dollars—that Mr Ghani’s government had been due to gain access to next week.

Toyota will slash production by 40% in September because of the global shortage of semiconductors. Until now its stockpiles had insulated the Japanese carmaker from the scarcity, but the fast-spreading Delta variant in southeast Asia, where most chips are made, hit it hard. Toyota will maintain its production targets for the year, making up for the shortfall later.

America’s Federal Trade Commission refiled a major antitrust lawsuit against Facebook. In June a federal judge dismissed its complaint for lacking detail and gave the consumer-watchdog agency until Thursday to beef it up. The FTC alleges that Facebook is an abusive monopolist, buying and blocking competitors to maintain dominance.

The website has been a popular venue for sex work, owing to its hands-off approach to content moderation. But the firm’s payment processors pressured it to change its approach—they are keen to avoid association with material that may be sexually exploitative. Nudity will be permissible in some circumstances.

Malaysia’s king is expected to invite Ismail Sabri Yaakob, a former deputy prime minister, to form a government, after the incumbent prime minister resigned earlier this week. The appointment would mark the return of the United Malays National Organisation which had ruled since independence in 1957 until it was dislodged in 2018. The new PM will face a parliamentary confidence vote.

A 49-year-old man from North Carolina who claimed to have a bomb in his truck surrendered to police after an hours-long standoff near the Capitol in Washington. The suspect made anti-government threats, which he broadcast on Facebook during the standoff. Congress is in recess, but authorities had evacuated the area of Capitol Hill around the Library of Congress.
