The Taliban have reportedly taken responsibility for controlling the crowds outside Kabul airport in Afghanistan. Witnesses said members of the group were firing into the air and forcing the crowd into orderly queues with batons. Scenes outside the airport—which is being managed by American, British and NATO troops—have been chaotic for several days as thousands of people desperately try to escape. Seven Afghan civilians were killed in the crush on Saturday, according to Britain’s Ministry of Defence. At least 20 people have died since last Sunday. Several countries are trying to evacuate their citizens and Afghans with visas.

The Pentagon announced that 18 planes from six airlines will take Afghan evacuees from military bases in Germany, Qatar and Bahrain to third countries, freeing up military aircraft to help get people out of Afghanistan. This is just the third time America’s defence department has activated the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, a programme that enlists commercial aircraft to augment America’s airlift capacity.

New Zealand reported 24 new cases on Saturday, most in Auckland, its biggest city. Australia reported 830 new cases in New South Wales, a record for any Australian state. Police clashed with anti-lockdown protesters in Sydney and Melbourne.

The country’s government announced that gasoline prices would be raised by 66% because of a partial withdrawal of subsidies. Lebanon’s energy shortage has sparked violent demonstrations and paralysed basic services.

Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Malaysia’s new prime minister, started his term by announcing that he would ask opposition leaders to join the government’s covid-19 committees. Mr Ismail Sabri, who was sworn in on Saturday, also said the country would buy 6m additional vaccine doses by early September. Malaysia has more covid infections and deaths, relative to its population, than any other country in Asia.

Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, said that an accord allowing Russian gas to flow through Ukraine must be extended “as quickly as possible”. Ukraine’s government worries that the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which will carry natural gas directly from Russia to Germany, will endanger its energy supply. Mrs Merkel has just concluded her last visit to Ukraine before stepping down as chancellor.

Meanwhile New Yorkers braced for Tropical Storm Henri, which made landfall today. A state of emergency has been declared in the city. Residents of Connecticut and Rhode Island have been told to shelter in place.
