America’s Food and Drug Administration granted full approval for the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech covid-19 vaccine on people aged 16 and older. The designation will probably inspire more vaccine mandates by firms, universities and local governments. It is also hoped that it will persuade some of the 85m eligible unvaccinated Americans to get jabbed. Until now the vaccine had been authorised for emergency use only.

Thousands of people are fleeing Taliban rule in the country. The militant group is controlling crowds around Kabul airport, currently the only escape route for many. Earlier an Afghan guard was killed after a gun fight broke out between unidentified gunmen, Afghan guards and Western security forces.

The Taliban named an acting head of the Afghanistan central bank. Haji Mohammad Idris, who led the Taliban’s economic commission, was appointed to help stabilise the country’s collapsing economy. Banks have been closed, government employees unpaid and many businesses shut while the militant group seized control. The prices of basic goods have also risen sharply.

BYD, a Chinese carmaker, scrapped plans to list its chipmaking division on the stockmarket, one of 42 IPOs that have reportedly been suspended in Shanghai and Shenzhen. The flotation of BYD Semiconductor was shelved after Chinese regulators investigated the law firm advising on the deal. BYD had hoped to raise at least $421m from the sale.

The pace of America’s economic rebound slowed to an eight-month low in August, according to business surveys. Supply-chain bottlenecks and labour shortages, exacerbated by the spread of the Delta variant of covid-19, dampened activity.

India will sell $81bn worth of state-owned companies over the next four years, according to a government think-tank. The move forms part of a massive privatisation plan announced in the budget back in February. The government said it would maintain its presence in just four sectors, including atomic energy and defence.
