The Taliban said that Afghans should no longer head to Kabul’s airport to be evacuated by Western countries because of the chaotic scenes there. A spokesperson for the militant group also asked America not to encourage people to leave the country, as it needed “their talent”. Separately, it was reported that William Burns, the director of America’s CIA, met Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s de facto leader, on Monday in Kabul. It is the highest-level diplomatic meeting between America and the militant group since it seized the capital earlier this month, probably to discuss whether American troops can stay in Afghanistan past August 31st. President Joe Biden is under intense pressure to prolong the withdrawal deadline.

Separately, Ms Harris accused China of coercion over its “unlawful claims” in the South China Sea.

Hong Kong’s legislature still needs to approve the harsh new law, but this is likely to be a formality because no opposition members currently sit in it.

He won a stunning election victory on August 12th, beating the incumbent by about 1m votes, despite well-grounded fears that the process would be rigged. At his inauguration the former businessman promised to focus on “restoring macroeconomic stability” after the country defaulted on its debts in November.

This is the highest level since the government began to collect the data in 2008. Women and black people were especially prone to be out of work. The pandemic has destroyed many jobs, but the vestiges of apartheid and dubious labour policies caused mass unemployment long before the arrival of covid-19.

An original member of the group, he brought a jazz sensibility to his drumming style. “It’s silly, it’s supposed to be fun,” he once said of rock music.
