China’s refusal to share data hampered the assessment of how the virus started circulating—whether it leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan or came from a zoonotic spillover, for example. China duly called the report an act of politics, not science.

The content-subscription platform, on which users pay to view photos and videos, saw its revenues soar thanks to pandemic boredom. It also became popular with sex workers. The firm had initially claimed the ban was necessary to comply with its banks, which did not want to handle payments for explicit material.

The sum is more than all the money it has made since it floated as a public company. Charitable pledges by Chinese tech firms have taken off in an attempt to ward off a crackdown on the sector.

Delta Air Lines said employees who are unvaccinated for covid-19 and enrolled in its corporate health-insurance plan must pay an extra $200 a month beginning in November. It is an early indication that premiums may rise for jab-nots, to account for the risk of expensive treatment and hospitalisation. Later next month the airline will also stop offering sick pay to unvaccinated workers who contract covid and miss work.
