Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party threatened to pull out of the country’s devolved power-sharing government “within weeks” if more border checks on goods moving to and from the rest of Britain are implemented. The largest unionist party dislikes the Northern Ireland protocol, a controversial part of the Brexit deal, which has kept Northern Ireland within the EU’s single market but created a customs border in the Irish sea.

Since May claims have fallen twice as sharply in states that cut enhanced covid-19 benefits early than in states that kept them through the summer.

The European Central Bank said it would reduce its emergency bond-buying programme, instituted during the pandemic, citing “favourable financing conditions” and higher inflation. Currently the bank purchases around €80bn ($95bn) worth of mostly eurozone government debt a month; it will do so at a “moderately lower pace” in future. The scheme will continue until at least next March.

Ford said it will stop manufacturing cars in India. With accumulated General losses of more than $2bn in ten years, a market share of just 1.6% and an abysmal track-record for not using its full manufacturing capacity, the American carmaker has run out of gas. Jim Farley, Ford’s boss, called it a “difficult but necessary” decision. Motors, a rival, left India in 2017.

About 200 people, including Americans, flew out of Kabul airport on a Qatar Airways charter plane. It was the first such flight out of the Afghan capital since the international evacuation ended almost two weeks ago. The new Taliban government agreed to these departures, and another leaves on Friday.

France will offer free birth control to women up to the age of 25 from January 1st 2022, increasing the previous age limit of 18. The state will pick up the cost of any medical appointments, tests or other birth-control related care at an estimated cost of €21m ($24.8m) annually. Olivier Véran, the French health minister, said contraception use among young women was dropping because it was too expensive.

EasyJet rejected a takeover offer from an undisclosed bidder, reportedly Hungarian rival Wizz Air, choosing instead to try to raise £1.2bn ($1.7bn) from shareholders. The British budget airline is struggling because of reduced travel and has lost more than £2bn since the pandemic began. EasyJet’s boss said that the share sale would “accelerate” the company’s recovery plan.
