The trial of those accused of organising and perpetrating the terrorist attacks on the Bataclan concert hall and other venues in Paris in 2015 started today amid extremely high security. The only surviving member of the assailant group, Salah Abdeslam, identified himself as an “Islamic State soldier” before the court. In all, there are 20 defendants. The trial, in Paris, is due to last about nine months.

Last year 15 gigawatts of solar capacity were added; that will have to reach 30GW a year until 2025 then 60GW annually until 2030 to achieve the goal. Much depends on congressional Democrats passing their $3.5trn budget, which allocates money for climate-change adaptation.

The blaze, which occured in a block for prisoners convicted of drug crimes, is thought to have been ignited by an electrical fault; the prison’s electrical system had not been upgraded since 1972. The facility has around 2,000 inmates—three times the amount it was designed for.

India’s government told the country’s top court that women can join military colleges and qualify for permanent commission. Progress towards gender equality in the armed forces has been slow; women make up 0.56% of India’s 1.4m military personnel (compared with, for instance, about 20% in America). Last month the court criticised the government for barring women from taking certain military exams.

The European Union rejected fresh calls from Britain to renegotiate the Northern Ireland protocol, a contentious slice of the Brexit deal that allows Northern Ireland to remain within the customs union. Britain claims the arrangement is not working and announced on Monday that it was further postponing the implementation of border checks on goods crossing into the province from the mainland.
