America’s Justice Department reached a deal with Meng Wanzhou, an executive at Huawei, a Chinese telecoms giant. Once she admits some wrongdoing, prosecutors will defer and eventually drop wire- and bank-fraud charges stemming from Huawei’s sanctions-busting business with Iran. Ms Meng, who has been fighting extradition to America from Canada, will be allowed to return to China.
미 법무부가 중국 통신사 화웨이 임원 Meng Wanzhou와 합의에 이르렀다. 미국은 Meng Wanzhou가 잘못을 인정하는경우 화웨이가 이란과의 거래를 위해 사기 등 행위를 함으로써 이란 제재법을 위반한 혐의에 대한 기소를 연기 및 철회하겠다고 제안한 것이다. Meng Wanzhou는 현재까지 캐나다에서 미국으로 이송되는 것을 피하고자 했으며, 중국으로 송환될 예정이다.
Seven countries signed a “no new coal” pledge, initiated by the United Nations, ahead of COP26, the UN climate summit in November. Britain, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Montenegro, Sri Lanka all promised to stop building new coal plants. Since 2015, the world has cancelled 1,175GW of planned coal-fired power projects, roughly the same as the total coal capacity of China.

China broadened its war on cryptocurrencies, outlawing all crypto transactions and “mining”, the digital coins’ energy-intensive minting process. Overseas exchanges, such as Coinbase and Binance, are banned from serving mainland investors. Separately, Chinese authorities detained two executives at HNA Group, a bankrupt conglomerate, over “suspected crimes”.
중국은 암호화폐 거래는 물론 디지털 화폐 생성 과정인 “채굴”에 대해서도 모두 불법화할 것이라며 규제 범위를 확대했다. 중국 투자자는 암호화폐 거래소 Coinbase 그리고 Binance에서 거래가 금지된다. 이와 별도로 중국 당국은 파산한 대기업 HNA Group의 임원 2명을 구속했다.

An investigation is currently underway, and the agents have been re-assigned. Meanwhile, the thousands of Haitians who had gathered near the town of Del Rio in Texas have been dispersed by American border patrol—many deported—and their camp disassembled.
미국 멕시코 국경에서 말을 탄 국경 경비대원이 아이티 난민을 쫒아간 사건이 사회적 분노를 일으킨 가운데 미 대통령은 경비대원을 찾아내 “대가를 치르게 할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 현재 조사가 진행 중이며 해당 경비대원은 업무 재배치를 받았다. 한편 미국 국경 경비대원은 국경 근처 지역에 있는 수천 명의 아이티인들을 쫒아내 대부분 송환했으며, 난민촌은 해체됐다.
A spokesperson for Boris Johnson disputed Jair Bolsonaro’s claim that Britain’s prime minister had asked for an emergency food deal. Brazil’s president said the deal was intended to ease a supply crunch of an unspecified food product. A covid-19 and Brexit-induced shortage of truck drivers, combined with climbing natural gas prices, have fuelled concerns of empty supermarket shelves in the run-up to Christmas.

Taiwan’s aspiration to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 11-country trade deal, evoked different reactions from its neighbours. Japan welcomed its application, citing shared “fundamental values” such as basic human rights and the rule of law. China, which claims dominion of the island-state, flew fighter jets close to Taiwan to make its views clear.

The European Commission rebuked FIFA, football’s world governing body, for its plan to hold the World Cup every two years instead of four, citing a duty to “preserve a model that respects the interests of fans”. UEFA, which oversees European football, expressed concerns that a biennial tournament would harm players’ health and negatively impact women’s tournaments.
