Volvo, a Swedish carmaker owned by Geely, a Chinese auto firm, said it will raise 25bn Swedish krona ($2.86bn) through a flotation in Stockholm. The listing caps a dramatic turnaround for the safety-centric brand. Since Ford, an American carmaker, unloaded it around a decade ago, Volvo has boosted sales and raced ahead in electrification. All its new cars are now fully electric or hybrid.

Abiy Ahmed was sworn in for a second term as Ethiopia’s prime minister after his party won parliamentary elections in June (with some constituencies’ voting delayed until last week). Abiy’s government has been criticised for its conduct in quelling an ethnic insurgency in the Tigray region. The UN has warned that the area’s residents face famine because of a government blockade of aid deliveries.

The Chinese air force flew more than 50 planes close to Taiwan, the largest in a series of incursions into the country’s airspace. Some 150 Chinese aircraft have entered Taiwan’s air defense zone in the last four days, an intimidation tactic that the ruling Communist Party has repeatedly used over the last year to remind the independent island that China considers it to be part of its sovereign territory.

Trading in shares of Evergrande and Hopson Development, a real estate firm, was suspended on the Hong Kong stock exchange as Chinese state-backed media suggested that the latter was considering taking a 51% stake in the embattled group’s property services unit. Evergrande has $300bn of liabilities, mostly short-term. Uncertainty about its future has sparked fears of a wider financial crisis.

Japan’s parliament elected Kishida Fumio as the country’s 100th prime minister. The vote was a formality; Mr Kishida was picked last week to lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He is expected to focus on the strength and security of the economy, reflecting growing worries about China. Mr Kishida immediately called a general election for October 31st, presumably to capitalise on his post-election honeymoon.

New Zealand’s government abandoned its strategic ambition to lift lockdowns only once covid-19 was eliminated. As Delta cases continue to rise, the country is adopting the more common strategy of easing lockdowns before that point is reached, beginning this week. Currently just 48% of the population is fully vaccinated; strict lockdowns will end when that figure reaches 90%.

The price of Brent crude, an international oil benchmark, surpassed $81 a barrel—the highest level in three years—after OPEC and its allies resisted calls to increase output. Despite tight energy supplies, the cartel said it would stick to the gradual increases agreed to over the summer, raising production each month by a total of 400,000 barrels a day.
