Thousands of people took to the streets of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, to protest against the military government that seized power on October 25th. Security forces fired tear gas and live bullets at the crowds, killing at least five according to early reports. Protestors are demanding the release of the imprisoned prime minister Abdalla Hamdok, who was ousted in the coup, and a return to civilian rule.

Some governments have accused Russia, a close ally of Belarus, of orchestrating the crisis, which the Kremlin denies.

The majority of deaths were from synthetic opioids such as fentanyl: highly potent, doses of it are often misjudged. Job losses and social isolation from the pandemic exacerbated what was already a public-health crisis in America.

The White House said that America and China agreed to hold talks on nuclear-arms controls—though the date, format and range of discussions must still be negotiated. The announcement followed a friendly, though largely platitudinal, summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping on Tuesday. America has recently professed alarm at the pace at which China is developing nukes. The two countries also agreed to reduce visa restrictions on one another’s journalists.

Britain added to the concern among central banks about rising inflation, recording the highest rate in almost a decade for the 12 months to October. The cost of living rose by 4.2% during this period, mainly due to higher prices for energy and second-hand cars. Inflation is now more than double the Bank of England’s target of 2%.

The Philippines announced that it had approved Novavax’s covid-19 vaccine for emergency use on adults. The vaccine will be manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. This latest authorisation comes shortly before the country is due to receive 300,000 courses of Merck’s antiviral covid drug molnupiravir, a deal secured last month. Infections are currently decreasing in the country.
