A jury in Brunswick, Georgia found three white men guilty of murdering Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old unarmed black man. Travis McMichael, his father Gregory McMichael and their neighbour William Bryan chased Mr Arbery, who was on a jog, because they suspected him of burglary. After a confrontation, filmed by Mr Bryan, Travis McMichael shot Mr Arbery. The accused claimed they were acting in self-defence; they face minimum sentences of life imprisonment. A judge will decide if they get the possibility of parole.

At least 31 migrants drowned trying to cross the English Channel from France, the most fatalities recorded in a single incident since tracking began. Boris Johnson, Britain’s prime minister, said he was “appalled” and promised to pay France more money to increase police patrols along the French coast. Nearly 26,000 migrants have made the trip so far this year, more than triple last year’s total.

The three parties that hope to form Germany’s new government finalised a coalition deal. The leader of the Social Democrats, Olaf Scholz, will probably be the new chancellor. Policies that were agreed on include the phasing out of coal by 2030, ahead of schedule, and the legalisation of cannabis in licensed premises. The deal will now be voted on by party conferences of the Social Democrats and Free Democrats, and by party members in the case of the Greens.

The news prompted protests across the continent. German officials may soon opt for a full or partial lockdown, and the Dutch government is set to impose new measures on Friday. With cases rising, compulsory vaccination will probably become more common.

Barbados will become a monarch-free republic on November 30th after removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. The island nation, a British colony for more than 300 years, chose Sandra Mason, the governor-general, to replace the queen in the symbolic role. Ms Mason previously highlighted the urgency of self-governance, saying that “the time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind”.

Sweden elected Magdalena Andersson as its first female prime minister. The country’s finance minister and leader of the Social Democrat party will take the mantle once a new government is formed, expected on Friday, replacing Stefan Lofven, who in June became the first prime minister to lose a no-confidence vote. Ms Andersson just scraped a win; one more vote against her would have meant defeat.
