Germany’s health minister issued more dire warnings about the country’s “dramatic” rise in covid-19 cases. Jens Spahn called for new measures to contain the pandemic, including only allowing those who have been vaccinated or recovered from the infection access to more public spaces. Meanwhile America’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention advised against travelling to Germany and neighbouring Denmark, raising its recommendation to the highest level.

America will release 50m barrels of oil from its national reserves in the coming months, in an attempt to contain rising energy prices and surging inflation. Britain will release 1.5m barrels and India 5m; announcements from China, Japan and South Korea are expected. The last globally coordinated release came in 2011 to compensate for output lost in Libya’s civil war.

A federal jury in Ohio found three pharmacy chains—CVS, Walgreens and Walmart—liable for their role in fuelling the opioid epidemic in two of the state’s counties. Plaintiffs alleged that the pharmacies broke the law by creating a “public nuisance”. A judge will determine the settlement amount separately. CVS, which denies the allegations, said it would appeal against the verdict.

A former student leader of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement was sentenced to a total of 43 months in prison. Tony Chung, aged 20, was charged with trying to separate the territory from China under a draconian national-security law, and with money laundering. Mr Chung had been the leader of Studentlocalism, which disbanded before the law was passed in June 2020.

The Turkish lira briefly fell by 15% against the dollar on Tuesday before recovering slightly after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan defended recent interest rate cuts and vowed to win his “economic war of independence”. Mr Erdogan holds an unorthodox view that higher rates cause inflation. The central bank has cut rates by 4 percentage points since September despite annual inflation rising close to 20%.

At least 45 people, 12 of whom were children, died after a bus crashed and caught fire in western Bulgaria. Most of the passengers were North Macedonian tourists returning from Turkey. It is not yet known what caused the disaster, which occurred on a motorway south-west of Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
