Israel will ban foreigners from entering the country for two weeks as it imposes measures to battle the Omicron variant of covid-19. Other countries are tightening international travel rules, notably limiting the arrivals of travellers from southern Africa, where Omicron was first identified and looks to be increasingly prevalent. A few cases have also been identified in Australia, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy and elsewhere.

A report from 2019 claimed Serbia had Europe’s worst per capita rate of pollution-related deaths.

A study by researchers at Peking University warned of a “colossal outbreak” of covid-19 in China, if the country eased its zero-tolerance policy that limits much travel to the country. Were China to adopt the more relaxed measures seen in most other countries, it could see over 630,000 covid infections each day, they said.

The crackdown in Rakhine state in 2017 resulted in thousands of deaths and drove 750,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh. The case will be heard under universal jurisdiction, the idea that extremely serious cases can be tried anywhere.

LATAM Airlines, Latin America's largest carrier, filed a plan to exit bankruptcy. The Chilean airline filed for protection from its creditors in May 2020 as the first wave of the pandemic broke over the travel industry. The plan, which needs to be approved by creditors, envisages the injection of $8.2bn of new financing, including a rights issue worth $800m.
