The World Health Organisation warned that the Omicron variant of covid-19 posed a “very high” risk with “severe consequences” should it cause infections to surge. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden told Americans not to panic, and said vaccinations and masks, rather than lockdowns, were the best way to cope with the variant. Many countries banned arrivals from southern Africa; a few, such as Israel and Japan, barred all foreigners. South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said the travel bans against his country were unscientific and discriminatory.

Jack Dorsey stepped down as Twitter’s CEO with immediate effect. Parag Agrawal, the social-media company’s chief technology officer, will take over. Mr Dorsey co-founded Twitter in 2006, was CEO until 2008 when he was pushed out, then returned in 2015. He said Twitter was “ready to move on from its founders”. He will remain on the board until his term expires next year.

Iran resumed negotiations with world powers in Vienna aimed at saving a 2015 nuclear deal. Diplomats from the EU and Russia were upbeat after the first round of discussions, but Iran’s new government is taking a tough line. Its negotiators want sanctions to be lifted immediately and a guarantee that they will not be reimposed in future.

Inflation in Germany reached its highest rate in decades. According to the EU’s harmonised measure, prices rose by 6% year-on-year in November. Supply-chain disruption and a temporary reduction in value added tax last year explain the increase. Earlier Spain and Belgium both reported inflation of 5.6%. A European Central Bank executive board member said “November will prove to be the peak”.

Sweden’s first female prime minister, Magdalena Andersson, who quit hours after becoming premier last week, was reappointed. Ms Andersson, of the Social Democrats, was briefly in coalition with the Swedish Greens. That alliance fell apart after parliament backed a budget drafted by opposition parties, including a nationalist group. Ms Andersson will now try to lead a single-party government until elections next September.

A special session of the World Health Organisation, comprising its 194 members, reached a preliminary agreement on a new binding international accord to prevent pandemics. The outgoing German chancellor, Angela Merkel, addressed the meeting to say that the WHO needed more financial support from member states.
