Jerome Powell, the chairman of America’s Federal Reserve, said the Omicron variant was a risk to America’s economy. Mr Powell warned the variant could discourage staff from returning to work in-person, exacerbating strains on the labour market and supply chains. President Joe Biden has told Americans not to panic, and said vaccinations and masks, rather than lockdowns, will be the best way to cope with Omicron.

The secretary-general of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, warned Russia that there would be a “high price to pay” if it were to use force against Ukraine. The sabre-rattling came as Russia massed troops on the border of the former Soviet republic. On Monday, Belarus announced joint exercises with Russia on its own border with Ukraine.

Britain’s antitrust regulator ordered Meta, Facebook’s parent company, to sell Giphy, a platform for sharing video clips that it bought last year. The Competition and Markets Authority said the acquisition would reduce competition in the display-advertising market and among social-media firms by, for example, denying others access to Giphy’s images. Meta disputed the findings and said it would consider appealing against the decision.

A former member of Islamic State was found guilty of genocide against the Yazidi religious minority by a court in Frankfurt, Germany. Taha al-J, an Iraqi man, enslaved a mother and her five-year-old child, who died of thirst. He was sentenced to life in prison. The Kurdish-speaking Yazidi were persecuted and enslaved after IS took control of parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Inflation, which was 4.1% last month, has risen because of high energy costs (up by 27% year-on-year in November) and supply-chain disruptions. Next month the European Central Bank is expected to announce the date by which it will end its pandemic asset-purchases.
