The United States and several European countries reported record daily rises in covid infections, driven by the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant. America had over 440,000 new cases on Monday, while Britain reported 183,000 new infections on Wednesday. Daily case records were also broken in France, Italy and Portugal. Despite its milder symptoms, the World Health Organisation warned that Omicron could overwhelm health systems.

Chinese officials admitted that they were struggling to get sufficient supplies to residents in the northern city of Xi’an, which has been under a strict lockdown since December 23rd. Inhabitants complained on social media that they do not have enough food. The measures, which mean no one can leave or enter the city without approval, are in response to around 1,000 covid-19 infections this month.

Joe Biden will speak with Vladimir Putin on Thursday at the Kremlin’s request, amid tensions over Russia’s military buildup along its border with Ukraine and worries of an invasion. A spokesperson for the White House said that “de-escalation…will be required” for progress. On January 10th representatives from the two countries will meet in Geneva for more talks.

The government of Indonesia agreed to allow more than 100 Rohingyas adrift in a boat off the coast of Aceh to come ashore. The move came after pressure from the UN, human-rights groups and local Acehnese. Previously Indonesia had said it would merely push the boat into neighbouring Malaysian waters. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas live in refugee camps in Bangladesh having fled a genocide in Myanmar.

Israel’s defence minister, Benny Gantz, approved “confidence-building measures” meant to improve relations with neighbouring Palestine. These included transferring tax payments (which Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority but has withheld because it claims the money goes to terrorists), authorising permits for Palestinian merchants and approving thousands of residency statuses. The decision followed a rare meeting between Mr Gantz and Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president.

Harry Reid, who led the Democrats in America’s Senate for 12 years, has died at the age of 82. Mr Reid served as the senator for Nevada for three decades and is regarded as one of the most influential recent American lawmakers. He is credited as being instrumental in the passage of President Barack Obama’s most important legislation, including the Affordable Care Act.
