Cases of covid-19 mounted in many countries as the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 continued to spread. New York state reported that more than 85,000 cases of covid-19 were confirmed on New Year’s Eve, its highest daily total yet. France became the sixth country to record more than 10m cases of covid. Several Indian cities also reported rising case counts, although Delhi’s chief minister told reporters that infections in the capital were mild and hospitalisation rates were low.

The shipping industry is struggling to recover from the covid-19 pandemic. In March the canal was blocked for six days when a Panama-flagged ship, the Ever Given, ran aground.

More than 3,000 flights, over half of them journeys that began or ended in America, were cancelled on Sunday, because of poor weather and a surge in covid-19 cases related to the Omicron variant. Covid left many airlines short of staff; healthy employees were offered extra pay to work overtime, but many declined, because they feared contracting the virus or having to deal with unruly passengers.

Tesla said it had delivered 308,600 cars in the fourth quarter of 2021, outstripping its previous record and analysts’ forecasts. Investors’ enthusiasm has made Tesla the world’s most valuable car company, with a stockmarket capitalisation of over $1trn—although the electric carmaker makes far fewer vehicles than the industry’s giants. It produced 930,000 last year; Toyota and Volkswagen probably made about 9m each.

Finland’s president and prime minister insisted, in their New Year speeches, that the country has the option of seeking to join NATO at any time. Like Sweden, Finland is not part of any multilateral military agreements, but it co-operates increasingly with members of the alliance. Its neighbour Russia, which has stoked tensions by massing around 100,000 troops farther south, on its border with Ukraine, opposes any expansion of NATO.

A fire broke out in South Africa’s national parliament in Cape Town. One blaze in the upper house has been contained, but the fire also spread to the chamber of the National Assembly. The entire parliamentary complex has been severely damaged. The cause of the fire is unclear, but a 51-year-old man is being questioned by the police.
