North Korea conducted what appeared to be its first ballistic-missile test since October, by lobbing an as-yet-unidentified projectile from its east coast into the sea. On Friday Kim Jong Un, who just celebrated ten years as the country’s dictator, promised to modernise North Korea’s weaponry. UN resolutions prohibit it from conducting such tests.

Kazakhstan’s government resigned following violent nationwide protests over a fuel price increase. The protests, which injured 95 police officers and had triggered a state of emergency in parts of the country, began on Sunday after price controls on liquefied petroleum gas, a popular car fuel, were lifted. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered the interim government to reinstate the controls and expand them to other “socially important” goods.

Taiwan will set up a $200m fund to invest in Lithuanian industries and boost trade between the two countries. The cash is an encouragement to hold steady. China, which considers Taiwan its own, is pressing for Lithuania to revoke the island’s permission to operate a de facto embassy in Vilnius, the capital, under its own name.

Shares in Huarong dropped by as much as 55% as the troubled Chinese asset manager resumed trading on Hong Kong’s stock exchange, following a $6.6bn bailout from state-backed investors. The company’s stock had been suspended for nine months for missing a deadline to file its 2020 earnings. Share prices are now trading at their lowest level since Huarong’s debut in 2015.

Toyota became America’s top-selling carmaker in 2021, ousting General Motors, which had held the number-one spot since 1931. The Japanese firm outsold its Detroit-based competitor in America by about 114,000 vehicles, with sales up by 10%, compared with a slide of 13% at GM. Toyota has weathered the chip shortage better than its rivals. Meanwhile, Sony, a Japanese electronics-cum-entertainment giant, said it would set up a subsidiary to produce electric vehicles.
