North Korea said that a missile that it tested on Wednesday was a hypersonic one. It was the country’s first test since October, and its second overall of a hypersonic weapon. Such “gliding warheads” can evade enemies’ detection systems for longer by flying closer to the ground than conventional intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Dozens of protesters and 13 police officers have reportedly been killed as anti-government demonstrations continue in Kazakhstan. Russian paratroopers were called in after a state of emergency was declared by Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan’s president, as part of a “peacekeeping” mission by six former Soviet states and fronted by Russia. A fuel-price increase triggered mass protests which snowballed into a campaign to oust Nursultan Nazarbayev, a strongman former president who rules alongside Mr Tokayev.

President Joe Biden used a speech commemorating the first anniversary of the storming of America’s Capitol to mount an attack of his own. Without mentioning his predecessor by name, Mr Biden accused Donald Trump of spreading a “web of lies” after having lost the election, endangering democracy. Shortly afterwards Mr Trump struck back, saying “the Big Lie was the Election itself”.

A Ukrainian court seized property owned by Petro Poroshenko as part of an investigation into whether the former president committed high treason. Mr Poroshenko is accused of “facilitating the activities” of Russian-backed separatists fighting government forces, including helping them sell $54m-worth of coal, during his presidency. He denies any wrongdoing. More than 13,200 people have died in the conflict since April 2014.

America’s trade deficit hit $80bn in November, close to September’s record of $81bn. Demand for cars, industrial supplies and consumer goods such as toys and games during the holiday season boosted imports. Signs that supply-chain bottlenecks are easing also helped. The trade deficit has grown nearly 30% year-on-year since November 2020.

France’s privacy watchdog fined Google and Facebook for making it too difficult to reject cookies (snippets of code designed to track users on the internet). The CNIL demanded that the search engine pay €150m ($169m), while the social media network was hit with a charge of €60m. The tech giants have three months to pay, and must also simplify their privacy options.

Despite its milder symptoms, the volume of Omicron cases began straining hospitals in America. Hospitalisations increased by 45% over the past week and are at their highest levels in nearly a year. In Germany, the government plans to shorten self-isolation periods to pre-empt a strain on critical services. Singapore said that people would lose their fully vaccinated status if they did not soon get a booster jab.
