Nvidia Can Sell AI Chip to China Again After CEO Meets Trump (WSJ. 20250715)
Chip maker Nvidia says it's received assurances from the Trump administration that it can sell its advanced AI chips to China. The news came as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was in Beijing meeting senior officials, and just days after we reported, he directly appealed to President Trump to be able to do business in China and tap into the country's AI talent. The administration's move marks a turnaround after the Commerce Department restricted sales of the chip in April, costing Nvidia billions of dollars. China's economy showed resilience in the first half of the year, even as it came under pressure from US trade tariffs. GDP grew by 5.2% in the second quarter year over year, a slightly slower pace than the first three months, and in line with economists' forecasts. The figures show China is on track to hit the government's full year target of around 5% growth. Robust exports have been a surprising engine of growth despite President Trump's shifting tariff assault. Meanwhile, Swedish car maker Volvo is warning that those tariffs and launch delays would hit the profitability of two electric models in the US, leading to a 1.2 billion dollar one-off charge. Volvo, which is majority owned by China's Zhejiang Geely, has been grappling with tariff uncertainty, muted electric vehicle demand, and intensifying competition in China. It recently said it would cut around 3000 jobs as part of a wider plan to slash costs. Asian stocks ended the day mostly higher, European equities are up in midday trading, and US futures are gaining ahead of a slew of bank earnings due out this morning, and the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index report for June expected at 8:30 AM Eastern.
