Federal Reserve Holds the Line on Interest Rates (WSJ. 20250730)
U.S. stock indexes and the day mixed after the Federal Reserve holds interest rates steady as expected. Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, signals reluctance about a rate cut at the Central Bank's next meeting in September. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 172 points to close at 44,461. The S&P 500 fell eight points. And the Nasdaq climbed 31 points. For the first time since 1993, two Fed governors dissented from the majority decision voicing support for a rate cut. Meanwhile, President Trump put pressure on U.S. trading partners hiking Brazil tariffs to 50% and singling out India for its links to Moscow. Saying goods from India would face 25% tariffs. Among individual companies, chocolate maker Hershey trimmed its annual outlook to reflect higher projected tariff expenses. It posted stronger than forecast quarterly results and shares rose, almost one and a half percent. SoFi Technologies plans a public offering of $1.5 billion of stock. Shares in the financial technology company fell 2.4%, having hit a record high yesterday after its results topped forecasts and it raised guidance. Starbucks's earnings undershot estimates. The coffee chain said it was investing more than $500 million in staffing and abandoning pickup only stores as part of its response to a sales slump. Shares end of the day down almost a quarter of a percent. And Visa posted forecast beating quarterly results, citing resilient consumer spending shares dipped 0.1%.
