Trump Administration Defends Firing of Labor Statistics Head (WSJ. 20250804)
The Trump administration is defending the President's controversial move to fire the head of the Bureau of Labour Statistics following Friday's weaker-than-expected jobs number. Over the weekend, Trump's Chief Economic Adviser, Kevin Hassett, said the dismissal is part of Trump's plan for further changes at the agency. Trump asserted without evidence that the government's jobs data have been manipulated for political purposes after last week's data showed that hiring slowed dramatically in July and that the number of people unemployed for at least 27 weeks hit the highest level since 2017. Dozens of Texas House Democrats fled the state late yesterday in order to block Republican plans to redraw the state's congressional map, a move that would give the GOP five new seats. In response, Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened to remove the Democrats from office or charge them with felonies. Republicans have called their plan fair game and necessary to hold their national majority, but Democrats have argued that the unusual mid-decade redistricting amounts to cheating. And UBS has agreed to pay $300 million to settle outstanding obligations that stem from a deal Credit Suisse had agreed to with the US Justice Department over bonds backed by mortgages sold before the 2008 financial crisis. The settlement means the Swiss bank sheds another legal case it inherited as part of its acquisition of its former rival more than two years after it closed a rescue takeover engineered by Swiss authorities. In May, UBS agreed to pay more than $500 million to settle a years-long US tax probe into Credit Suisse.
