U.S. Inflation Held Steady in July, But Core Inflation Rose (WSJ. 20250812)
The Labor Department said today that consumer prices were up 2.7% in July from a year earlier, unchanged from June's gain of 2.7%. That was below the 2.8% rise expected by economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal. But core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 3.1% over the last 12 months above forecast for a 3% increase. It has been about six months since tariffs arrived on the scene, but June was the first month that they finally made the impact economists had long predicted, driving prices higher in import-heavy categories, including home furnishings, apparel, and toys. We're exclusively reporting that artificial intelligence startup Perplexity is making an unsolicited offer to acquire Google's Chrome browser for $34.5 billion. Perplexity, which is valued at $18 billion, said that several investors, including large VC funds, had agreed to back the transaction in full. The offer comes after a US District Judge ruled last year that Google illegally monopolized the search market. And the judge is expected to rule this month on how to restore competition. Google has so far not indicated willingness to sell Chrome. Two subsidiaries of News Corp, parent of The Journal, have sued Perplexity. And Spirit Airlines said it may not continue to operate if its financial results don't improve faster than it previously expected. The airline emerged from bankruptcy in March, but travel demand among price sensitive consumers has remained under pressure. Spirit said it will take additional steps to improve liquidity, but there's doubt it can continue as a going concern within a year.
