Trump: ‘Possibility’ That U.S., Europe Could Offer Security Guarantees to Ukraine (20250815)
President Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, are set to meet one-on-one today in Alaska for the first time in several years to discuss what it'll take to end the war in Ukraine. Ahead of his meeting, President Trump told reporters there is a possibility that the US would join with Europe to offer security guarantees to Ukraine. He added that any security guarantees wouldn't come in the form of NATO. He also said there would be very severe consequences for Russia if Putin isn't willing to work towards a peace deal. Washington has sued to stop President Trump's takeover of the local police department in the latest clash between the city's democratic leadership and the Republican administration over governmental control in the nation's capitol. Washington DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed the lawsuit this morning, hours after the Trump administration gave the police chief's powers to the head of the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Expectations of more inflation ahead have soured US consumers' mood. A preliminary reading of the University of Michigan Sentiment survey found that in August, consumer sentiment dropped to 58.6 from 61.7 in July. The survey teams says consumers continue to fear inflation and unemployment in the future. And US retail sales rose 0.5% in July from June, matching economists expectations. The Commerce Department says the increase was driven in part by auto purchases, which rose 1.6% on the month. Discounting autos, retail sales rose 0.3% in July, also matching economists expectations.
