Trump Calls for Fed Governor to Resign After Accusation of Mortgage Fraud (20250820)
President Trump has told aides he's considering attempting to fire a Biden-appointed Federal Reserve governor after one of his housing officials accused her of mortgage fraud. That's according to a senior White House official and another person familiar with the matter. Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, alleged on social media this morning that Fed Governor Lisa Cook, submitted what he called fraudulent information on a pair of mortgage applications. Trump wrote in a social media post in response to Pulte's claims that, "Cook must resign now." The White House official and person familiar with the matter said that behind the scenes, Trump is discussing trying to fire her for cause if Cook doesn't resign. A spokesman for the Fed's Board of Governors said he had no immediate comment. Shares of Target fell in early trading after the company said its Chief Operating Officer, Michael Fiddelke, would become the new chief executive Officer in February, succeeding Brian Cornell, who has held the top job for 11 years. Today, the company said its comparable sales fell 1.9% in the latest quarter. That's better than the decline analysts expected, but it marks the 11th consecutive quarter of flat or falling sales. And the Israeli military says it will begin calling up around 60,000 reservists for duty and expand active duty for around 20,000 reservists already serving as it proceeds with plans to take over Gaza City. The offensive is expected to begin in September, although the military has already started operations on the outskirts of the Hamas stronghold, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are believed to be sheltering. The decision comes amid Israeli anger over hostages and international pressure over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
