Trump Threatens New Tariffs on Countries Taxing Tech Companies (WSJ. 20250826)
President Trump says the U.S. will increase tariffs and impose export restrictions on countries that tax or regulate American tech firms. The comment, made on Truth Social last night, marks the president's most direct threat of retaliation against nations he sees as discriminating against companies like Google and Meta. Despite clashing with Big Tech companies over the years, his administration has taken up their cause across a number of trade negotiations. Plus, the UK defense and aerospace telecom-equipment company, Filtronic, has signed a $62.5 million contract with Elon Musk's SpaceX, its single largest order to date. The order involves the company's gallium nitride E-band product, which enhances low-Earth orbit satellite connectivity. Filtronic said the order is set to boost its revenue in fiscal 2027 and in the fiscal year ending May 2028. Finally, AT&T says it's agreed to buy certain wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for about $23 billion in cash. The licenses cover over 400 markets across the U.S., strengthening AT&T's low-band and mid-band spectrum holdings. AT&T said the transaction is expected to close in mid-2026.
