N.Y. Appeals Court Throws Out $500 Million Judgment Against Trump (WSJ. 20250821)
An appeals court threw out a $500 million judgment against President Trump and his business today paving the way for further proceedings before New York's highest court. The decision from a five-judge panel is a significant legal boost for Trump in a case that was brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James in 2022. In one of three opinions, none of which commanded a majority, Justice Peter Moulton wrote that the disgorgement order is an excessive fine that violates the Constitution. US home sales unexpectedly rose 2% in July, raising hopes for a better fall. That's according to the National Association of Realtors. The pickup reflected a slight improvement in affordability and increased activity from investors. News Corp, owner of the Journal also operates Realtor.com under license from NAR. Walmart sales are growing rapidly, even as tariffs push prices higher. While some shoppers are pulling back on spending due to tariff-driven price increases, Walmart is absorbing enough of the cost to keep its price hikes lower than the national average. Investors were disappointed, however, that Walmart missed its earnings target for the latest quarter. The company said it is raising prices on about 10% of the goods it imports because of tariffs and absorbing the rest of the elevated costs. And according to a joint statement released today, the US will keep the current 27.5% tariffs on automobiles from the European Union until the 27 nation block introduces legislation to reduce levies on a variety of US goods.
