Silicon Valley Group Pushes Back Against AI Regulations (WSJ. 20250825)
A group of Silicon Valley's most influential names, including venture capital firm, Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI President Greg Brockman, are putting more than $100 million into a new network of political action committees and organizations, with the aim of pushing back against strict AI regulation. Leading the Future, as the group is called, hopes to use campaign donations and digital ads ahead of next year's midterm elections. To advocate for select AI policies and oppose candidates, the group believes will stifle the industry. Keurig Dr. Pepper has struck an agreement to buy European coffee firm JDE Peet's, for roughly $18 billion. After the deal closes Keurig Dr. Pepper plans to reverse the 2018 merger of Keurig and Dr. Pepper by separating into two US-listed companies, one focused on coffee and the other on refreshment beverages. Keurig Dr. Pepper's CEO, Tim Cofer said the deal is happening at a time of financial strength for the firm. And a new study estimates that the wealthiest Americans might be paying more in taxes than earlier thought. With access to Anonymized IRS data, the study attempts to create a comprehensive estimate of income and taxes for the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans. The co-authors put the figure they pay in tax at just under 24%, far higher than the Biden administration's frequent claim that US billionaires paid slightly more than 8%. The new study says that nearly 40% come through corporate taxes, with the bulk of the rest from individual income and payroll taxes.
