SpaceX Agrees to $17 Billion Deal for Wireless Airwaves(WSJ. 20250908)
SpaceX has agreed to pay $17 billion for the rights to use some of EchoStar's valuable spectrum for cell phone service. The company also agreed to pay about $2 billion of cash toward interest payments on EchoStar debt through November 2027. The new spectrum rights would significantly improve SpaceX's Starlink's ability to connect with cell phones in remote areas out of cell phone towers reach. Plus, Databricks, one of Silicon Valley's most valuable private companies, is now set to make $4 billion in revenue for its fiscal year ending in January. That's up 50% from last year. The company is raising $1 billion in its latest round of financing, putting it at a $100 billion valuation. The financing will add to the company's war chest for employee recruitment and retention to help it in the escalating AI talent wars. And OpenAI is lending its AI tools and computing resources to help create a feature-length animated movie expected to be released globally next year. The goal is to demonstrate that AI can produce movies faster and cheaper than traditional Hollywood methods. The movie, Critterz, has a budget of less than $30 million, far less than what animated films typically cost. The production team plans to cast human actors for character voices and hire artists to draw sketches that are fed into OpenAI's tools, including GPT-5 and image-generating models.
