The U.S. Department of Defense announced it has designated Anthropic as a ‘supply chain risk’ company. Consequently, all contractors/suppliers doing business with the U.S. Department of Defense are prohibited from doing business with Anthropic.
Anthropic needed terms that its AI technology would not be used for domestic surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons.
However, the Pentagon rejected it, insisting that a private company could not decide how its tools would be used in national security work.
Other AI companies like OpenAI are angling to replace Anthropic, signing with the Pentagon under relaxed terms.
