An audit found that the concrete wall installed at Muan Airport, the site of a passenger plane disaster two years ago, was due to the neglect of the sloping runway to save on construction costs.
Localizers, navigation antennas that assist aircraft landings, must be installed higher than the runway, but it was cheaper to erect sturdy concrete barrier beneath the localizers than to cut the sloped runway and install collapsible structures.
A simulation analysis found that if the fragile structures had been installed, the 179 passengers who died in 2024 could have survived.
Furthermore, Muan Airport concealed safety risks by submitting false reports for 16 years.
