Photographer Gail Albert Halaban has conducted a project over ~20 years in ~25 cities, capturing the daily life seen through the windows of neighboring houses across a street.
The project began with inspiration from on the artist's daughter's birthday, when the owner of a flower shop across the street sent flowers wishing her a happy birthday, after seeing balloon decorations for the party through the window.
In large cities like New York, showing interest in and giving gifts to neighbors living across the street is a very rare occurrence.
The goal of the project, according to the artist, is to express community and friendship within the city.
The project takes place ~three hours, with the consent of the house where the camera will be placed and the house across from it.
Initially, the artist had to ask acquaintances for help, but as the project became known, requests to take photos began to come in, and the neighbors across the street would even meet up after the shoot.
Through the project, the artist gained the insight that living with friendly neighbors is much more important than how expensive a neighborhood one lives in.
