Film production and distribution company Amazon MGM is garnering attention due to the box office success of Project Hail Mary.
The ~$200 million film is projected to become Amazon MGM's highest-grossing film of all time, having recorded ~$80 million in revenue in North America within just three days of its release.
This marks the first time since Oppenheimer that a non-sequel or series film has earned over $70 million in its opening weekend.
Amazon had already secured the film rights to the novel Project Hail Mary before acquiring MGM in 2020.
The film is a space odyssey about a reluctant hero (starring Ryan Gosling) and a faceless alien made of rocks.
Amazon MGM entrusted the adaptation to the same writer (Drew Goddard) who previously adapted another film(The Martian) based on another novel written by the same author (Andy Weir).
Since film production companies prefer producing sequels or series to secure audiences, adapting a novel into a film carries a risk.
Nevertheless, films with original stories that offer spectacle in theaters tend to be box office hits, and this novel was produced because the imaginary science fiction was compelling.
