For reference, Disney and Universal sued Midjourney for copyright infringement (unauthorized use of their characters), while Midjourney countered that it was fair use.
Additionally, three months ago, OpenAI signed a three-year licensing agreement to produce videos using Disney characters.
OpenAI did not disclose the reason for shutting down the Sora service, but it appears to be aimed at focusing on next year's IPO.
OpenAI's revenue is ~$13 billion, but the company plans to spend ~$100 billion over the next four years on initiatives such as data center expansion.
Sora generates no revenue, consumes significant computing power and electricity, and has a lower user base than ChatGPT.
