The ephemerality of the sight and the impossibility of keeping it make one appreciate the nature’s artistry even more.

If you know me well enough, you’d know about my obsession with sunsets. Although I don’t see sunrises as often as I see sunsets, they also have a special place in my heart because of our family tradition of seeing the first sunrise of the year either at a seaside or at the top of a mountain.
Whenever I do get to enjoy sunrises or sunsets, I marvel at beautiful yet variant surroundings that changed depending on the color of the sky and the amount and thickness of cloud covering it.
While I have countless number of accounts of gaping at breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, words don’t do justice to the actual beauty of the moment that touches one’s heart. But if anyone had noticed, many of the photos I use for my stories are of sunrises or sunsets. That’s my dire attempt to capture the spectacular scene before me.
Although most people appreciate the nature’s artistry during dawn and dusk, some are skeptical of the power and impact of sunrises and sunsets. As a fervent adorer of sunrises/sunsets, I’m writing four reasons why sunsets and sunrises are not overrated and why one should also take some time off to appreciate sunrises and sunsets.
1. Transience
The beauty of sunrises and sunsets are definitely in its transitory quality. From the moment the sun starts tinting the sky and until 10 to 15 minutes after the sun has completely set, the color of the sky constantly changes from yellow to orange, to pink and violet then to purple and navy, and any other color in between. You know that it is not going to last, looking at how the color and its depth changes every second.
Every time I see a nice sunset or a sunrise, I just want to stop doing whatever I am doing and start taking a photo or a time-lapse video so that I can keep at least a fraction of what’s in front of me. The ephemerality of the sight and the impossibility of keeping it make one appreciate the nature’s artistry even more.

Although the sun moves — I mean the Earth — throughout the day, people rarely notice it. But as a day transforms into dusk, one notices the traces of the sun, where it’s heading to and the colors changing around it. And that’s how we become aware of the passage of time.
When I was 14, I used to sit on my bed and feel the warmth of the orangish yellow sunlight moving from one side of the room to the other. That’s when I would really feel the flow of time and be able to imagine myself growing up into someone that I aspired. The intangibility of time became somewhat palpable through observing the movement of sunlight.

As the sun dips into the horizon, the scenery that unravels before one’s eyes varies everyday and everywhere. Each is remarkable in its own ways, be it by a beach, at a dense concrete jungle, or at the top of a volcano. It lets us appreciate the versatility of the mother nature and the planet Earth that we are living in.

Those who take photos know that the golden hour is one of the best times of the day to take photos. The strong ray of golden light not only makes everything more alluring but also creates a sharp contrast between light and shadow and a silhouette. Sunrises and sunsets are basically a light show that the nature offers us every day that many unfortunately seem to miss.

나를 잘 안다면 내가 일몰을 얼마나 좋아하는지 알 것이다. 사실 일몰만큼 일출을 많이 보지는 않지만, 새해의 첫날에는 바닷가나 산 정상에서 해가 뜨는 걸 보던 우리 가족 덕분에 일출 역시 가슴 한 편에 중요한 자리를 차지하고 있다.
어쨌거나 해가 뜨고 지는 것을 볼 때마다 나는 하늘의 색과 그날 구름의 양과 밀도에 따라 달라지는 아름다우면서 다채로운 주변 환경에 감탄한다.
숨 멎도록 아름다운 일출과 일몰을 셀 수 없이 많이 보긴 했지만 사실 마음을 울리는 그 순간의 경관을 글로 표현하는 데에는 한계가 있다. 그래도 누가 알아차렸는지는 모르겠지만 내가 쓰는 글에 함께 올라오는 사진들의 대부분은 일출이나 일몰의 사진들이다. 그게 내 앞에 놓인 장대한 장면을 담기 위한 처절한 시도의 결과이다.
많은 사람들이 여명과 황혼 때에 자연이 펼치는 이 예술적 기교의 진가를 인정하긴 하지만 일출과 일몰의 영향력을 부인하는 사람들도 종종 있다. 일출과 일몰을 열렬하게 예찬하는 사람으로서 나는 왜 이 둘이 과대평가되지 않았으며 사람들이 시간을 내서 굳이 해가 뜨고 지는 것을 봐야 하는지에 대해 4가지 이유를 이야기해 보겠다.
1. 일시적임
일출과 일몰의 아름다움은 분명 이들의 일시적인 속성에 있다. 태양이 하늘을 물들이기 시작하는 순간부터 해가 완전히 진 후 10분에서 15분이 지났을 때까지 하늘의 색은 노란색에서 주황색으로, 분홍색에서 분홍빛 보라색으로, 그리고는 보라색에서 짙은 파란색으로, 더해서 이 색들 사이에 있는 다른 색들로 서서히 변한다. 매 초마다 바뀌는 색과 농도를 보며 이게 지속되지 않을 거라는 것을 알 수 있다.
매번 해가 뜨고 지는 것을 볼 때마다 무엇을 하고 있든 나는 하던 것을 멈추고 사진이나 타임랩스 비디오를 찍으려 한다. 그래서 내 앞에 있는 장관을 조금이나마 담아내려고 한다. 눈 앞에 보이는 장면의 덧없음과 이 장면이 유지되는 것의 불가능함을 앎으로써 자연의 예술적인 기교를 더욱더 음미하게 한다.
홍콩, 20132. 시간의 흐름
“시간은 마치 강과 같다. 같은 물에 두 번 손을 담글 수 없다. 왜냐하면 지나간 물살은 다시 같은 자리를 절대 지나가지 않기 때문이다.” — 작자미상
하루 종일 해가, 아니 지구가 움직이기는 하지만 사람들은 이를 대체로 인지하지 못한다. 하지만 날이 해질녘에 가까워지면서 사람들은 태양의 자취를 알아차리기 시작한다. 해가 어느 방향으로 가는지, 그리고 주변의 색은 어떻게 변하는지 등을 인지한다. 그것이 우리는 시간의 흐름을 알아채는 방법이다.
14살 즈음에는 침대에 걸터앉아 햇빛의 따스함을 주황색이 도는 노란색 빛이 방의 한 쪽에서 다른 한쪽으로 움직이는 것을 보며 느끼곤 했다. 그때가 바로 시간의 흐름을 피부로 느끼고 내가 자라서 원하던 사람으로 성장하는 것을 상상하던 때였다. 만질 수 없는 시간이라는 개념이 햇빛의 움직임을 관찰함으로써 만질 수 있는 것이 되는 순간이었다.

해가 지평선 아래로 사라지면서 눈 앞에 보이는 경관은 매일, 그리고 위치에 따라서도 달라진다. 바닷가에서든, 건물들이 빽빽하게 들어선 도시에서든, 화산 꼭대기에서든 이 광경은 각자만의 방식으로 아름답다. 이는 자연과 우리가 살고 있는 지구의 다채로움을 느끼고 이에 감사할 수 있게 한다.
홍콩, 20134. 사진 찍기에 좋은 시간
사진을 찍어본 사람은 이 ‘금빛 시간’이 사진을 찍기에 가장 적합한 시간 중 하나라는 것을 알 것이다. 짙은 금빛이 내린 곳이라면 무엇이든지 매혹적으로 보일뿐더러 이는 빛과 그림자의 강한 대비와 실루엣을 만들어낸다. 일출과 일몰은 자연이 매일같이 우리에게 제공하는 빛의 쇼인데도 많은 이들이 안타깝게도 이를 놓치고 있다.
