미국 회사 회의 용어 정리
한국도 그렇겠지만 미국 회사 생활에서도 월요일은 미팅의 연속이다.
주말이 끝난 것도 꿀꿀한데 월요일 미팅은 더욱 그렇다.
더구나, 오늘 미팅은 중요 클라이언트와 큰 미팅을 앞서고 하는 준비 미팅이라니...
“이번 미팅의 목적이 정확히 뭐죠?”
“그게… 일단 협업 가능성을 탐색하는 수준?”
“그럼 우리가 제안서를 굳이 다 들고 갈 필요는 없겠네요.”
이런 식으로 대화가 흐르지만, 사실 속마음은 다들 같다.
‘오늘 회의, 제발 무난하게만 넘어가자.’
'빨리 끝나라, 나 할 일이 산더미다.'
이 싫은 미팅을 쉽고 간단하고 명확하게 끝내는 표현들을 알아보자.
미국에서 쓰는 회사 영어로.
1️⃣ 미팅 목적이 뭐야?
민수: 우리 이번 클라이언트 미팅, 도대체 핵심이 뭐야?
Minsoo: Just so we’re clear, what exactly is the purpose of this meeting?
“Just so we’re clear”는 ‘오해 없게 하자’, ‘확실히 짚고 넘어가자’는 뜻이다.
회의가 쓸데없이 길어지지 않게 해주는 마법 같은 한 줄.
� Just so we’re clear, I’m not approving this budget yet.
소라: 나는 이번 미팅이 우리가 얼마나 기술적으로 준비돼 있는지 보여주는 자리라고 봐.
Sora: To me, this meeting is all about showcasing what we’ve got under the hood.
“What we’ve got under the hood”는 ‘보닛 안의 엔진’처럼, 겉으로 안 보이는 실력을 보여준다는 뜻.
� The new chip really shows what’s under the hood of our design team.
준호: 근데 클라이언트가 다른 업체랑도 미팅 잡았다던데. 그게 좀 마음에 걸려.
Junho: Yeah, but they’re talking to other vendors too. It’s been weighing on my mind.
“Weigh on my mind”는 뭔가 계속 신경 쓰이거나 찝찝할 때 쓰는 표현.
� That delayed shipment has been weighing on my mind all week.
2️⃣ 회의 형식부터 정할까?
민수: 이번엔 프레젠테이션 중심으로 갈까? 아니면 좀 자유롭게 얘기 나누는 식으로?
Minsoo: Should we go presentation-heavy or keep it more like an open discussion?
소라: 지난번엔 우리가 발표만 하다 끝났잖아. 피드백도 거의 못 받았고.
Sora: Last time it turned into a one-way street. We barely got any feedback.
“One-way street”은 ‘일방통행’이라는 뜻. 대화가 한쪽으로만 흐를 때 쓴다.
� If this meeting becomes a one-way street again, we won’t learn anything.
준호: 맞아. 이번엔 좀 인터랙티브하게 가자. 그래야 관심 끌지.
Junho: Exactly. The more interactive it is, the better chance we have to capture their interest.
“Capture someone’s interest”는 단순히 ‘관심을 끌다’보다 훨씬 자연스럽고 세련된 표현.

3️⃣ 어젠다랑 시간 분배
민수: 어젠다는 미리 보내자. 그래야 시간 맞추기 편하지.
Minsoo: Let’s send out the agenda ahead of time. That way we can align on time allocation.
소라: 지난번엔 너무 늦게 보내서 다들 준비도 안 돼 있었잖아.
Sora: Yeah, it came as no surprise that everyone was underprepared last time.
“Come as no surprise”는 ‘놀랍지도 않다’는 말로, 살짝 냉소적인 뉘앙스다.
� It came as no surprise that the deal fell through.
준호: 이번엔 30분 안에 끝내자. 그 이상 하면 다들 집중력 떨어져.
Junho: Let’s keep it tight — thirty minutes tops. There’s no substitute for focus.
“There’s no substitute for ~”는 “~만큼 좋은 건 없다.”

4️⃣ 역할 분담
소라: 난 기술 설명 맡을게. 근데 너무 디테일 들어가면 또 길어질 수도 있어.
Sora: I’ll handle the tech side. But I might lose myself in the details if I’m not careful.
“Lose oneself in something”은 어떤 일에 너무 몰입해서 본질을 놓친다는 뜻.
� He lost himself in the project and forgot about the deadline.
준호: 걱정마. 중간에 길어지면 내가 정리해줄게.
Junho: No worries — I’ll step in if we start to drift. Enough said.
“Enough said.”
더 말할 필요 없다는 뜻으로, 리더답게 딱 정리할 때 쓰기 좋다.

5️⃣ 자료 점검
민수: 자료는 다 업데이트됐지? 지난주 버전은 좀 구렸어.
Minsoo: Are all the materials updated? Last week’s version felt a bit outdated.
소라: 이번에 그래픽도 새로 넣었어. 꽤 괜찮아 보여.
Sora: I added new visuals. It’s looking pretty promising.
“Promising”은 ‘전망이 좋다’, ‘좋은 결과가 예상된다’는 의미.
� The partnership looks promising so far.
준호: 좋아. 이번엔 클라이언트가 ‘오, 얘네 다르네’ 하게 만들어보자.
Junho: Nice. Let’s make them sit up and take notice this time.
“Sit up and take notice”는 ‘확 주목하게 만들다’는 뜻.

6️⃣ 톤 조율
민수: 지난번처럼 분위기 험악하지 않게 하자.
Minsoo: Let’s not turn this into another shouting match.
“Shouting match”는 감정적인 말싸움.
� The meeting turned into a shouting match over pricing.
준호: 맞아. 이번엔 설득보다 공감으로 가자. 그게 훨씬 낫지.
Junho: Agreed. You win some, you lose some — but empathy always wins in the long run.
“You win some, you lose some.”
‘항상 이길 순 없지’ — 결과에 쿨하게 반응할 때 쓰는 말.
