When I speak of desire, it isn’t merely a desire to pursue a particular job, hobby, or vocation. I’m speaking of a desire running deeper than that. This is a longing for truth, for love, for God, and to honestly relate with others from the depths of who I most fully am.
Irenaeus of Lyons wrote this: “Life in man is the glory of God; the life of man is the vision of God.” In other words, the glory of God is a human being fully alive. I wholeheartedly agree. The only problem is, too often human beings don’t know what being fully alive actually means. And when we get a hint of it, instead of embracing it, we often run from it.
When was the last time you allowed yourself to consider who you are? I realize this is a personal question, requesting permission to access a part of your soul that is vulnerable and potentially unpredictable, much bigger than your capacity to control. And the idea of exposing that desire might be terrifying for you. But you aren’t expected to face these depths alone.
