요즘도 한국에서 초등학생 학력평가를 하는지 모르겠다. 어느 쪽에서는 학력 평가를 더 강화해야 한다, 다른 쪽에서는 평가를 금지해야 한다. 말이 많은 것 같다. 미국에서 아이들이 학교를 다니니, 학교에서 보라는 시험은 봐야겠지. 1년 넘게 아이들을 학교에 보내보니 초등학생은 3가지 주된 시험이 있다. 그것은 MAT, MCAP, CogAT이다. 학년 주임 같은 선생님이 계시는데 그분이 언제 시험을 본다고 아래와 같이 공지를 해주신다.

2년째 미국에서 학교를 다닌 큰딸의 경우 다양한 시험 결과가 교육청 포탈에 순서대로 기록되어 있다.

모르는 사이에 이렇게나 많이 시험을 쳤구나. 아이가 고생했겠다 싶은 생각이 든다. 1년 차에 본시험은 크게 신경 쓸 일이 아니라서 자세히 알아보지 않았고, 2년 차부터는 1년 차와 비교하면서 어떤 점이 올랐고 부족한지 깊이 들여다보기 시작했다.
MAT test
MAP, or the Measure of Academic Progress, is an adaptive test which helps teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and assist them in making informed decisions that promote a child's individual academic growth.(MAP 또는 Academic Progress 측정은 교사, 학부모 및 행정가가 모든 학생의 학습을 개선하고 자녀의 개별 학업 성장을 촉진하는 정보에 입각한 결정을 내리는 데 도움을 주는 적응형 테스트입니다)
그냥 기본적으로 보는 시험이다. Although it is possible to score as high as 265 or more on the reading test and 285 or more on the math test, 240 (reading) and 250 (math) are typical top scores. 우리 아이들이 작년에 미국에 오자마자 본시험이라서 이 점수는 아주 엉망이다. 거의 최하위 수준이다. 아이들이 영어유치원을 나온 것도 아니고, 그냥 학원에서 영어를 조금씩 했던 아이들이라서 별 기대는 안 했지만, 그래도.......
2. Maryland School Assessment (MSA)
What is the Maryland state test?
The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) is a test of reading and math achievement that meets the testing requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The test is given each year in early March in reading and math at grades 3 through 8. The science test is given in April or early May.
