From Collective Genius by Linda Hill
몰라도 될 것 같은데 알고 나면 영어 표현이 더 풍부해지는 단어들.
이번에는 Harvard Business School에서 리더십을 가르치고 계시는 Linda Hill 교수님의 책 Collective Genius를 읽으면서 발견한 단어들을 모아봤다.
책장을 넘길수록 단어 목록이 한없이 길어져서 일단 반 끊고 가야겠다. 그래서 이건 part 1.
1. fortuitous 우연한, 뜻밖의 (instead of - by chance, unexpected)
As in all great adventures, my coauthors and I came together in large measure through fortuitous events.
2. incisive 예리한 (instead of - sharp, acute, intelligent)
They have been true partners in our journey, pushing our thinking forward with their insights and incisive questions.
3. confluence 합류 (instead of - joining, convergence)
My new goal became to build a studio that had the depth, robustness, and will to keep searching for the hard truths that preserve the confluence of forces necessary to create magic.
4. arduous 어려운 (instead of - difficult, hard)
.. Imagine you're watching a Pixar movie - the final outcome of this long, complicated, arduous process.
5. beget 낳다 (instead of - give life to, have, breed)
Ideas beget experiments and experiments beget more ideas, and any difference between ideation and implementation quickly fades.
6. smother 덮어 끄다 (instead of - choke, suffocate)
7. dissension 불화, 의견 차이 (instead of - disagreement, dispute)
They made sure the disapproval of more experienced expert members didn't smother dissension, minority viewpoints, or the fresh perspectives of the inexperienced or the newcomer.
8. prance (of a horse) 도약 (instead of - jump)
His passion was obvious as he literally pranced around the room and his colleagues laughed at his antics.
9. sparingly 아껴서, 딱 필요한 만큼만
In short, innovation leaders viewed structure in all its forms as a tool for facilitating the process of collaboration and discovery-driven learning. They used it sparingly. How much did they use? Just enough.
10. reverence 존경, 존중 (instead of - great respect)
He grew up less imbued than most in his culture with a reverence for hierarchy and formal authority.
11. attrition 약화 (instead of - weakening)
Customers continued to be unhappy and threatened to cancel; attrition had risen to more than 20 percent.
* 다른 사용예: employee attrition 직원의 사직 (자발적, 비자발적)
12. fiat 명령 (instead of - command, decree)
He could not take it by fiat where it needed to go.
여담으로, 그 작은 자동차 Fiat의 네이밍에 이런 당찬 뜻이 있었을 줄이야.
13. benighted 우매한, 잘 모르는 (instead of - ignorant, uneducated)
Everybody was willing to help their poor, benighted CEO!
14. coalesce 합쳐지다 (instead of - unite)
Nayar himself was chosen by Fortune for its first-ever global "Executive Dream Team" 2012, which was described as an "all-star leadership" that "could coalesce and dominate in any industry."
15. aficionado 열렬한 애호가 (instead of - a big fan)
Since his first ride in a race car at age seven, he had become a car aficionado, and though not an engineer by training, he was knowledgeable enough to converse with auto engineers on their own level.
