The Lamp for Each Step
시편 119편 105절 : 주의 말씀은 내 발에 등이요, 내 길에 빛이니이다.
예전에 콜로라도 여행 중 지하 5층 깊이로 이어진 동굴에 들어간 적이 있습니다. 가이드는 그곳을 ‘피치 블랙’, 즉 빛이 전혀 들어오지 않는 공간이라 설명하며 그때까지 내부를 밝히던 전등을 껐습니다. 눈을 뜨고 있었지만 아무것도 보이지 않았습니다.
이전까지는 어둠을 단순히 빛의 부재로만 생각했었는데 그 순간 저는 처음으로 빛이 없다는 것이 무엇인지를 실제로 체험했습니다. 눈이 있으되 보지 못하는 자란 표현이 실감되었습니다.
그때 떠오른 말씀이 있었습니다. “주의 말씀은 내 발에 등이요, 내 길에 빛이니이다.” 완전한 어둠 속에서 이 구절은 이전과는 전혀 다른 무게로 마음에 내려앉았습니다.
시편 119편이 기록되던 구약 시대의 밤도 그 때 그 콜로라도의 동굴처럼 한치 앞도 보이지 않을 만큼 캄캄했을 것입니다. 그 시대에 등을 들고 밤길을 걷는다는 것은 앞을 내다볼 수 있는 시야가 고작 한 걸음 정도에 불과했다는 뜻입니다. 사람들은 그 조심스러운 빛에 의지해 길을 걸어갔을 것입니다.
하나님은 우리의 인생 전체를 미리 보여주시지 않습니다. 대신 지금 필요한 한 걸음만큼을 비춰주시고 우리가 그 빛을 따라 걸을 것인지 아닌지를 묻고 계십니다.
어둠 속에 쌓여 있을 때 그 한 걸음을 내딛는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 무엇이 기다릴지 알 수 없는 상황 속에서 말씀을 신뢰하며 걷는 것 그것이 신앙입니다.
주님은 오늘도 조용히 묻고 계십니다. “내가 네 인생 전체를 비춰주지는 않지만 지금 이 순간 필요한 빛은 주겠다. 그 빛을 따라올 수 있겠느냐?”
오늘도 저는 그 빛을 붙잡습니다. 눈앞이 흐릿할지라도 내 발 앞을 밝히는 말씀의 빛을 따라 한 걸음씩 내딛습니다. 그 길 끝에 무엇이 기다리고 있을지는 알 수 없지만 그 말씀의 빛이 주님의 것이라는 사실 하나만으로 충분합니다.
Psalm 119:105 : Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Years ago, while traveling in Colorado, I visited a cave that stretched five stories underground. The guide explained that the place was “pitch black,” a space where no light could enter. Then he switched off the lamps that had been lighting our way. My eyes were wide open, yet I could see absolutely nothing.
Until then, I had thought of darkness merely as the absence of light. But in that moment, I experienced for the first time what it truly meant to have no light. I understood in a real way what it feels like to have eyes yet be unable to see.
In that silence and darkness, a verse came to mind: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Surrounded by complete blackness, those words pressed into my heart with a weight I had never felt before.
In the days when Psalm 119 was written, the night must have been just as impenetrable as that cave, dark enough to hide even the closest step ahead. Carrying a lamp in that time meant that one could see only a single step forward, no more. People had to trust that small, careful light as they walked.
God does not reveal the whole of our lives in advance. Instead, He shines enough light for the next step and asks whether we will trust Him enough to walk in it.
It is not easy to take that step when surrounded by darkness. Yet faith is precisely this: to walk forward in trust, not knowing what lies ahead, but holding on to His word.
Even today the Lord whispers to us: “I will not show you your entire life, but I will give you the light you need for this moment. Will you follow it?”
And so today I choose to hold on to that light. Even if the horizon remains hidden, I place my steps where His word shines. I do not know what awaits at the end of the road, but knowing that the light is His is enough.
