Love Beyond Boundaries
누가복음 8 장21절 : 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 내 모친과 내 동생들은 곧 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 이 사람들이라 하시니라
법을 만드는 것은 일종의 선을 긋는 행위입니다. 법은 선의 안과 밖을 나누어 구분하고 안과 밖을 다르게 대합니다. 예수님 이전의 유대 공동체는 율법을 통해 허용되는 질서와 그렇지 못한 질서를 구분하고 사회를 유지해 왔습니다. 하지만 잘 알다시피 예수님이 오셨을 당시 율법은 이미 질서 유지 이상의 가치가 되었고 사람보다 율법이 앞서는 이상한 질서로 변질되어 있었습니다.
예수님은 그런 유대인들에게 율법을 넘어서라 거듭 말씀하시며 율법의 선을 넘어서는 사랑을 말씀하셨습니다. 십계명이 부모를 공경하라고 가르칠 때 예수님은 부모의 범위를 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 모든 사람에게로 확장하여 율법 너머의 세계를 보이셨습니다.
예수님은 한결같이 율법이 규정한 세상의 경계를 뛰어넘고 아우르는 사랑의 본질에 대해서 말씀하십니다. 사랑은 우리로 하여금 특정한 관계나 범주에 머무르지 않도록 하고 법과 도덕, 규범을 넘어설 것을 요구합니다.
이 사랑의 길은 결코 가벼운 마음으로 걸을 수 있는 길은 아닌것 같습니다. 모든 사람을 품으라는 부름은 부담스럽기도 하고 무거운 짐처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 하지만 바로 그 무거움을 안고 한 걸음씩 내딛는 과정 안에서 법안에 갇혀 사느라 알지 못했던 예수님의 깊은 사랑을 만나게 되리라 믿습니다.
제가 사는 이 짧은 인생 동안 예수님께서 말씀하시는 그 사랑의 깊이를 모두 알 수는 없겠지만 예수님이 보여주신 그 경계를 넘어선 사랑을 조금씩 알아가며 살아가기를 원합니다. 그리고 예수님을 믿고 조금씩 더 깊은 곳으로 갈 수 있는 용기를 통해 예수님께서 보이신 사랑을 행하며 살수 있기를 바랍니다.
Luke 8:21: He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice."
Creating law is essentially the act of drawing a line. Law separates the inside from the outside and treats them differently. Before Jesus, the Jewish community maintained its order through the Law, distinguishing what was permissible from what was not. Yet, by the time Jesus came, the Law had already shifted from being a framework of order to becoming an end in itself, where people were subordinated to the Law, an order distorted and misplaced.
Jesus repeatedly told the Jews to move beyond the Law, teaching of a love that crosses the boundaries set by it. While the Ten Commandments instruct us to honor our parents, Jesus expanded the scope of parenthood to include all who do the will of God, opening our eyes to a world beyond the Law.
Again and again, Jesus spoke of the essence of love that transcends the boundaries the Law defined. Love does not let us remain confined within a particular relationship or category; it calls us to move beyond law, morality, and social norms.
This way of love is not one that can be walked lightly. The call to embrace all people often feels overwhelming, like carrying a heavy burden. Yet I believe it is precisely in bearing that weight and stepping forward one step at a time that we encounter the deeper love of Jesus, a love hidden from those who remain trapped within the confines of law.
In the brief life I live, I know I cannot fully comprehend the depth of the love Jesus spoke of. Still, I long to grow into it, little by little, and to live each day with the courage to follow Him beyond boundaries, practicing the love He revealed.
