The Last Expression of Love
마태복음 26:38 : 내 마음이 매우 고민하여 죽게 되었다.
마태복음 26: 41 : 시험에 들지 않게 깨어 기도하라. 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하도다
겟세마네 동산, 십자가를 앞둔 예수님은 제자들과 함께 앉으시며 이렇게 말씀하십니다. "내 마음이 매우 고민하여 죽게 되었으니 너희는 여기 머물러 나와 함께 깨어 있으라" 죽음을 향해 걸어가는 그 길에서 예수님의 마음은 이미 무겁게 짓눌려 있었습니다. 그는 하나님의 아들이었지만 동시에 인간으로서 죽음의 공포와 고통을 온전히 마주하고 계셨습니다. 땀이 핏방울처럼 떨어질 만큼 절박한 몸부림 속에서 그는 하나님께 순종의 길을 끝까지 붙들고자 하셨습니다.
그런데 곁에 있던 제자들은 그 긴박한 순간을 함께 견디지 못했습니다. 마음으로는 예수님과 함께하길 원했지만 육신은 피곤하여 눈을 감고 잠에 빠져버렸습니다. 예수님은 그들을 깨우며 이렇게 말씀하십니다. "시험에 들지 않게 깨어 기도하라. 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하도다"
이 말씀을 흔히 꾸짖음으로 이해하지만 저는 이 말씀이 예수님께서 인간을 향해 내리신 가장 깊은 이해이자 공감의 선언이라는 생각이 듭니다. 예수님은 제자들의 연약함을 보며 실망하신 것이 아니라 인간의 한계를 받아들이셨기 때문입니다. 그분 자신도 마음은 하나님을 향해 있었지만 육신은 죽음을 앞두고 고통하며 떨고 있었기 때문입니다. 예수님은 그 긴장과 불일치를 누구보다 잘 아셨습니다.
영혼은 하나님께 향하고 싶지만 몸은 쉽게 지치고 무너집니다. 그 모순과 불완전함을 예수님은 마지막 순간까지 함께 품으신 것입니다.
십자가를 앞둔 예수님이 제자들에게 남기신 마지막 말씀을 원망으로 읽는 것은 예수님의 성품과 맞지 않는다는 생각이 듭니다. 오히려 이 말씀은 이해와 공감, 그리고 사랑으로 읽어야 하지 않을까 하는 생각이 듭니다. "깨어 기도하라"는 말씀은 예수님 없이 남겨지게 될 제자들을 향한 초대의 말씀으로 읽고 싶습니다. 육신의 약함 속에서도 하나님께 붙들리라는 마지막 순간까지 이어진 부르심이었습니다.
예수님은 죽음을 앞두고 자신이 느끼는 고통을 숨기지 않으셨습니다. 그리고 제자들의 잠든 모습을 책망하지 않으셨습니다. 그 대신 마음과 육신이 다르게 움직이는 인간의 모습을 인정하시며 그 연약함조차 하나님 앞에 내어놓을 수 있도록 길을 열어주셨습니다. 이것이야말로 십자가로 향하던 예수님이 보여주신 마지막 사랑의 표정이라는 생각을 하며 하나님의 크신 사랑을 짐작도 할 수 없는 저의 한계를 다시 한번 보게 됩니다.

Matthew 26:41: Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, facing the cross, Jesus sat with His disciples and said, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." On the path toward His death, His heart was already weighed down with unbearable sorrow. He was the Son of God, but also fully human, facing the fear and agony of death in its entirety. With sweat falling like drops of blood, He wrestled desperately to hold on to the path of obedience to the very end.
Yet the disciples nearby could not endure the hour with Him. In their hearts, they wanted to stay awake with Jesus, but their bodies grew heavy with fatigue, and they fell asleep. Jesus woke them and said, "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
These words are often heard as a rebuke, but I believe they are one of Jesus’ deepest expressions of understanding and compassion toward humanity. He was not disappointed by their weakness but acknowledged it, because He Himself knew what it meant. His own heart was fixed on the Father, yet His human flesh trembled in the face of death. Jesus understood the tension and the gap between desire and weakness better than anyone.
The soul longs to turn toward God, yet the body grows weary and falters. Jesus carried that contradiction and frailty with Him until the very end.
To read His final words to the disciples as reproach seems out of character with who Jesus is. Rather, I believe they are words of empathy, compassion, and love. "Watch and pray" is not a command of frustration but an invitation to cling to God, even when the body is weak. It was His final call for the disciples, who would soon face life without Him.
Jesus did not hide His own anguish as He faced death, nor did He condemn His disciples for falling asleep. Instead, He recognized the human struggle of willing spirit and fragile flesh, and He opened a way for even that weakness to be brought before God. This, I believe, was the final expression of love on His way to the cross. And in seeing it, I am reminded once again of the limits of my own heart before the immeasurable love of God.
