When Life Becomes Eternal
사도행전 7장 55-56 : 스데반이 성령이 충만하여 하늘을 우러러 주목하여 하나님의 영광과 및 예수께서 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보고 말하되 보라 하늘이 열리고 인자가 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보노라 한대
사도행전을 읽다 보면 영원한 생명이라는 말의 또 다른 깊이를 생각하게 됩니다. 예수님의 생애는 부활로 마침표를 찍은 사건이 아니라 제자들의 삶 속에서 새롭게 이어지는 이야기였습니다. 그분의 말씀과 행적, 그리고 사랑의 방식이 제자들의 입술과 손끝, 그리고 선택 속에서 다시 살아나는 이야기가 바로 사도행전입니다.
사도행전은 복음의 생명이 어떻게 이어지는지를 보여줍니다. 예수님이 떠나신 자리에 제자들이 서고 그들의 순종 위에 또 다른 세대가 세워집니다. 이 영속성 속에서 영원한 생명은 한 인생의 시간이 연장되는 것이 아니라 공동체를 통해 끊어지지 않는 하나님의 생명의 흐름으로 드러납니다. 그 생명은 죽음으로 단절되지 않습니다. 오히려 죽음을 지나 다시 피어납니다.
스데반의 이야기는 그 진리를 가장 극적으로 보여줍니다. 그는 예수님처럼 불의한 재판 앞에 서고 사람들의 분노 앞에서도 두려움 없이 진리를 말했습니다. 아브라함에서 시작된 하나님의 이야기를 다시 짚어가며 하나님이 성전이 아닌 사람의 마음에 거하신다고 증언했습니다. 그 고백이 분노를 일으켰지만 스데반의 시선은 땅이 아니라 하늘을 향했습니다. 그의 눈앞에 열린 하늘 속에서 예수님은 여전히 살아 계셨습니다.
돌이 날아드는 그 순간에도 스데반은 저주하지 않았습니다. 그의 마지막 기도는 십자가 위의 예수님을 닮아 있었습니다. 죽음이 닫힘이 아니라 생명의 연결이 되는 장면이었습니다. 예수님의 삶과 죽음이 그의 안에서 재현되고 또다시 이어지는 순간이었습니다.
예수님의 이야기는 한 세대의 끝에서 멈추지 않았습니다. 그 이야기는 제자들의 걸음을 따라 그리고 그들의 믿음을 잇는 이들의 삶을 따라 흘러왔습니다. 그분의 생명은 우리를 통해 지금도 이어지고 있습니다. 그것이 복음이며 우리가 영원한 생명 안에 거한다는 의미일 수도 있겠구나 하는 생각을 해 봅니다.
우리가 언제고 예수님이 걸으신 길을 걷고 그분의 사랑 안에 머물 때 그 생명은 우리 안에서 다시 피어납니다. 그분이 우리 안에 살아 계실 때 우리는 이미 영원을 살고 있다고 믿습니다.
Acts 7:55–56 : But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."
As we read through the book of Acts, we begin to sense a deeper meaning of what eternal life truly is. The life of Jesus did not end with the resurrection. It was not a story with a final period, but one that continued through the lives of His disciples. His words, His works, and His way of love came alive again through their lips, their hands, and their choices. That unfolding of His life through them is what Acts reveals.
Acts tells the story of how the life of the gospel continues. Where Jesus once stood, the disciples now stand. Upon their faith and obedience, another generation takes root. In this continuity, eternal life is not the unending duration of a single life, but the unbroken flow of God's life through His people. That life is never severed by death. It blooms again, beyond it.
Stephen's story shows this truth in its most dramatic form. Like Jesus, he stands before an unjust council and speaks truth without fear, retelling the long story of God from Abraham to the temple and proclaiming that God does not dwell in buildings made by human hands,
but in the hearts of those who believe. His testimony provokes anger, yet his eyes remain fixed not on the earth but on heaven. Before him, heaven opens, and Jesus stands alive, radiant, and near.
Even as stones strike him, Stephen does not curse. His final prayer mirrors the heart of Jesus on the cross. In that moment, death does not close the story; it connects it. It becomes the passage where life continues, the moment when the life and death of Jesus are repeated and reborn in him.
The story of Jesus did not end with one generation. It has flowed through the steps of His followers and the faith of those who came after them. That same life continues now, through us. Perhaps this is what it means to dwell in eternal life: to be part of the stream of grace that never ceases to flow.
Whenever we walk the path Jesus walked, whenever we remain within His love, that life blooms again within us. When Christ lives in us, we are already living in eternity.
