The Measure of Righteousness
로마서 4:22 : 이 같은 아브라함의 믿음 때문에, 하나님께서는 그를 의롭다고 인정하셨던 것입니다.
바울은 아브라함의 이야기를 통해, 인간이 하나님과 "올바른 관계(의)"를 맺는 길은 율법의 행위가 아니라 믿음이라고 말합니다. 믿음은 '의'를 만들어내는 수단이 아니라 하나님께 자신을 전적으로 맡기는 신뢰의 행위입니다. 아브라함이 믿은 것은 자신의 가능성이 아니라 하나님의 신실하심이었고, 그 신뢰의 방향 자체가 하나님께서 '의롭다' 하신 근거가 되었습니다.
바울이 말하는 '의'는 도덕적 완벽함이 아닙니다. 그것은 하나님과의 관계가 바르게 회복된 상태이며 그 회복은 예수 그리스도를 통해 이루어졌습니다. 인간이 이 관계 안으로 들어가는 길은 행위가 아니라 믿음, 곧 하나님께 자신을 내어드리는 신뢰뿐입니다.
그러나 그 믿음의 길은 언제나 긴장 속에서 서 있습니다. 하나님은 보이지 않고 약속은 아직 완전히 성취되지 않았기 때문입니다. 이 간극 속에서 인간의 신뢰는 자주 흔들립니다. 그래서 우리는 '더 기도해야 한다', '더 잘해야 한다'는 행위의 방식으로 불안을 메우려 합니다. 하지만 만일 믿음이 어떤 행위로 완성될 수 있다면 그것은 이미 믿음이 아닙니다. 그 길은 하나님의 '의'로 향하는 길이 아니라 스스로를 의롭게 하려는 또 다른 시도일 뿐입니다.
진정한 믿음은 확신의 상태가 아니라 하나님께 머무르려는 지속적인 결단입니다. 아브라함의 믿음이 흔들림 없는 신념이 아니라 불가능 속에서도 하나님의 성품을 신뢰하려는 태도였듯이, 우리의 믿음도 그렇게 자라나야 합니다.
하나님은 지금도 그 믿음을 보십니다. 결과로 증명되지 않아도, 보상이 없어도, 하나님을 신뢰하는 그 마음이 관계를 바로 세우고 그 관계 안에서 하나님은 우리를 '의롭다' 하시는 자리로 이끌어 가십니다. 그 길 위에서 나의 믿음을 자라게 하시고, 의의 자리로 세우시는 하나님께 오늘도 의지합니다.
Romans 4:22 : This is why 'it was credited to him as righteousness.'
Through the story of Abraham, Paul shows that the way humans are made right with God is not through the works of the law, but through faith. Faith is not a means to produce righteousness, but an act of trust, a surrender of the self to God. Abraham’s faith was not in his own ability but in God’s faithfulness. The direction of that trust itself became the basis upon which God counted him righteous.
The "righteousness" Paul speaks of is not moral or legal perfection. It is the restored state of relationship with God, a relationship made whole through Jesus Christ. Humanity enters into this relationship not by doing, but by believing, by entrusting one’s life entirely to God.
Yet the journey of faith always exists within tension. God is unseen, and His promises are not yet fully realized. Within that gap, human trust often falters. We try to fill the silence with doing, praying more, performing better, striving harder, as if faith could be completed by effort. But if faith can be achieved by what we do, it ceases to be faith. That path no longer leads to God’s righteousness, but to another attempt at self-justification.
True faith is not a fixed state of certainty but a continual decision to remain in God.
Just as Abraham's faith was not unshakable conviction but a posture of trust in the impossible, so must ours grow in the same way.
God still sees that faith, the heart that trusts even without visible proof, even without reward. Such faith restores the relationship, and within that relationship, God leads us into the place where He calls us righteous.
On that path, I choose to rely once more on the God who grows my faith and establishes me in His righteousness.
