The Light That Undoes Us
사도행전 26장 15절 : 내가 이르되 주여 누구시니이까 하니 주께서 이르시되 나는 네가 박해하는 예수라.
바울의 눈을 덮은 빛은그가 보던 세계 전체를 무너뜨렸습니다. 그가 확신으로 삼았던 율법의 열심, 자신의 정의감과 신앙적 자부심은 빛 안에서 한순간에 예수를 박해하는 힘으로 드러났습니다. 그제서야 그는 자신이 하나님을 향한다고 믿었던 길이 실은 하나님을 대적하는 길이었음을 깨닫습니다. 그 깨달음이 바로 그의 회심이었습니다.
"주여, 누구시니이까."
그가 빛에게 던진 이 물음은 그가 신이라 믿어온 모든 우상이 무너지는 자리에서 터져 나온 절규였습니다. 그 빛은 그가 태어나 처음으로 경험한 참 하나님이었습니다.
이에 예수께서 "나는 네가 박해하는 예수라"고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 한 문장은 바울의 신학 전체를 뒤집어 놓았습니다. 그는 하나님을 위해 싸운다고 믿었지만 예수께서는 하나님이 바로 그 박해받는 자 안에 계셨다고 말씀하십니다. 하나님은 권력의 편이 아니라, 짓밟히는 자, 십자가 위의 자, 침묵 속에서 버림받은 자의 편에 서 계신 분이라는 사실이 드러난 것입니다.
그때부터 바울의 신앙은 '하나님을 위한 열심'에서 '하나님이 나를 찾아오신 은혜'로 방향을 바꿉니다. 그는 빛 앞에서 무너진 인간으로서 그 빛이 자신 안에서 일하도록 내어드립니다. 그의 사명은 더 이상 질서를 세우는 일이 아니라, 자신이 붙들고 있던 질서를 무너뜨리는 일이 됩니다. 그는 율법의 경계 바깥, 이방의 땅에서 박해받는 이들과 함께 복음을 전하며 살게 됩니다.
다메섹 도상에서의 바울처럼 우리도 신앙의 여정 속에서 자신이 붙잡고 있던 확신이 무너지는 순간을 경험합니다. 그리고 바로 그 자리에서 하나님은 말씀하십니다.
"나는 네가 박해하는 예수라."
그 음성은 심판이 아니라 초대입니다. 너의 신앙을 다시 세우라는 초대, 하나님을 대신해 말하지 말고 하나님이 말씀하시도록 침묵하라는 초대, 그리고 빛 앞에 무너진 그 자리에서 다시 일어나 증인이 되라는 초대입니다. 오늘도 우리를 초대하시는 하나님께 감사드리며 빛의 증인으로 살아갈 힘 주시기를 기도합니다.
Acts 26:15 : Then I asked, 'Who are you, Lord?' 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' the Lord replied.
The light that covered Paul's eyes shattered the entire world he thought he knew. His zeal for the law, his sense of righteousness, and his pride in his faith, all of it was exposed in that light as the very power that persecuted Jesus. In that moment, Paul realized that the path he believed was leading toward God had in fact been opposing Him. That realization became his conversion.
"Who are you, Lord?"
This question, thrown toward the light, was a cry rising from the ruins of every false god Paul had ever trusted. And that light was, for the first time in his life, the presence of the true and living God.
Then Jesus said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting." This single sentence overturned the whole foundation of Paul's theology. He had believed he was fighting for God, but Jesus revealed that God was present in the very ones being persecuted. God stands not with power, but with the trampled, the crucified, the forsaken, and the silent.
From that moment, Paul's faith turned from "zeal for God" to "grace from God who came to find me." Before the light, he collapsed as a man undone, and in that surrender allowed the light to work within him. His calling was no longer to preserve order, but to let go of the order he once clung to. He became a messenger of the gospel among the outcasts and the persecuted, beyond the boundaries of the law.
Like Paul on the road to Damascus, we too encounter moments in our journey of faith when our certainties collapse. And in that very place, God speaks:
"I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting."
That voice is not condemnation, it is invitation.
An invitation to rebuild our faith,
to stop speaking for God and allow God to speak,
to rise again as witnesses from the place where we fell before the light.
May we hear that voice today, give thanks for His mercy, and find the strength to live as witnesses of His light.
