When the Lord Stands Beside You
사도행전 23장 11절 : 그 날 밤에 주께서 바울 곁에 서서 이르시되, 담대하라. 네가 예루살렘에서 나의 일을 증언한 것 같이 로마에서도 증언하여야 하리라 하시니라.
바울은 로마 군영 안에 구금되어 있었습니다. 그는 성전에서 체포된 뒤 여러 차례의 폭력과 오해 속에 서 있었고, 밖에서는 그를 죽이려는 음모가 이미 퍼지고 있었습니다. 오랜 동역자들도 곁에 없었고, 예루살렘 교회조차 그를 적극적으로 보호할 수 없었습니다. 믿음으로 시작했던 증언이 오히려 자신을 위기의 한가운데로 이끈 셈이었습니다.
그때 주께서 "바울 곁에 서셨다"고 합니다. 바울은 여전히 구금된 몸이었고 세상의 위협도 그대로였지만 단 한 가지가 분명해졌습니다. 하나님이 그의 곁에 서 계신다는 사실이었습니다.
담대함은 두려움이 사라질 때 생기는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 두려움 한가운데서 하나님이 함께 계심을 깨달을 때 생겨납니다. 그 밤, 바울은 하나님의 현존에 매달렸고 그 확신이 그를 로마까지 가게 하는 힘이 되었습니다.
하나님의 방식은 이해하기 어렵습니다. 그분은 두려움을 제거하시기보다 두려움을 마주할 용기를 주십니다. 그 용기가 문제를 즉시 해결하지는 않지만 그 용기로 우리는 다시 걸을 수 있습니다.
우리 마음이 흔들릴 때 하나님은 여전히 우리 곁에 서 계십니다. 바울 곁에 계셨던 주님이 지금도 우리 곁에 서 계십니다. 하나님의 동행을 믿으며 담대히 걸어갈 때 그 다음 길로 우리를 하나님께서 인도하십니다.
Acts 23:11 : That night the Lord stood near Paul and said, 'Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.'
Paul was imprisoned in the Roman barracks. He had been seized in the temple, surrounded by violence and misunderstanding, and outside the walls, plots to kill him were already spreading. His longtime companions were nowhere near, and even the church in Jerusalem could do little to protect him. What began as an act of faith had now led him into the heart of danger.
Then, the Lord stood beside Paul. His chains remained, and the threats around him did not disappear, but one truth became unshakably clear: God was with him.
Courage does not come when fear is gone, it arises when, in the midst of fear, we realize that God is near. That night, Paul clung to the presence of God, and that assurance became the strength that carried him all the way to Rome.
God’s ways are often hard to understand. He does not always remove our fear; instead, He gives us the courage to face it. That courage may not solve everything at once, but it allows us to take the next step forward.
When our hearts tremble, God still stands beside us. The same Lord who stood by Paul stands by us even now. As we walk forward in faith, trusting His presence, He will lead us to the next place He has prepared.
