The God of hope
로마서 15장 13절 : 소망의 하나님께서 여러분이 믿음으로 얻는 모든 기쁨과 평화를 가득 채워 주셔서, 성령의 능력으로 소망이 넘치게 하시기를 빕니다.
바울은 하나님을 '소망의 하나님'이라 부릅니다. 그는 소망이 인간의 낙관이나 결심에서 비롯되는 것이 아니라 하나님을 신뢰하는 마음에서 자라나는 것임을 알고 있었습니다. 믿음이 깊어져도 삶은 여전히 흔들리고 그 흔들림 속에서 평화를 잃을 때도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그런 순간마다 상황을 바꾸기보다 우리의 마음을 먼저 붙드십니다. 그때 우리는 설명하기 어려운 기쁨과 고요히 스며드는 평화를 경험하게 됩니다.
바울이 말한 소망은 '언젠가 좋아질 거야' 하는 막연한 기대가 아니라 지금 이 순간에도 하나님이 일하고 계시다는 확신입니다. 그 확신이 우리 안에서 힘이 되어 성령의 능력으로 흘러넘칠 때 소망은 더 이상 개인의 마음에 머무르지 않고 누군가의 어둠을 밝히는 빛이 됩니다.
소망의 하나님은 내일을 보장하시는 분이라기보다 오늘을 견디게 하시고 지금을 살아내게 하시는 분입니다. 그분이 채워 주시는 기쁨과 평화가 우리 안에 흘러넘칠 때 그 소망은 세상 속에서 다시 누군가의 희망이 됩니다. 넘쳐나는 소망이 세상에 가득하기를 주님의 사랑이 끝내 이기기를 기도합니다.
Romans 15:13 : May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Paul calls God "the God of hope." He knew that hope does not come from human optimism or determination, but grows from trusting in God. Even when our faith deepens, life still trembles, and in those tremblings, peace can fade. Yet God does not always change our circumstances; He first steadies our hearts. In that moment, we begin to taste a joy that cannot be explained and a peace that quietly seeps into our souls.
The hope Paul speaks of is not a vague belief that "things will get better someday," but the conviction that God is at work here and now. When that assurance becomes strength within us and flows through us by the power of the Holy Spirit, hope no longer stays confined to one person’s heart, it becomes light that reaches into another's darkness.
The God of hope is not the one who simply guarantees tomorrow, but the one who sustains us today and enables us to live this very moment. When His joy and peace overflow within us, our hope becomes someone else’s reason to endure. May that overflowing hope fill the world, until the love of the Lord prevails in the end.
